Teachers Role and Education

Present Day School (today 2004)

 

• Today most teachers are women.
• Teachers live in the community in their own homes or drive to work from another community.
• Teachers must be qualified and have been taught how to be teachers.
• Teachers are not allowed to use a rod or strap or hit the students.
• We now have automatic bells that ring.
• Teachers have to supervise students every recess and noonhour

Past: One Room School

• Most teachers were men.
• Teachers often lived with families in the community and paid for their room and board

• Often the teachers were not qualified.
• Teachers could use the birch rod or strap if the students misbehaved.
• Teacher had to ring a hand bell.
• Teachers did not go outside to supervise the children at recess.
